Caption Defects in mucous gland cell maturation in Spdeftm1Shiv/Spdeftm1Shiv antra. A, significant (p < 0.001) decrease of Muc6 and Tff2 mRNAs in Spdeftm1Shiv/Spdeftm1Shiv (KO) antra as compared with the wild-type (WT), as determined by quantitative RT-PCR. B and C, strongly reduced staining for Tff2 (B) and GS-II lectin (C) in mutant antral mucous gland cells as compared with WT littermates. D and E, significantly reduced numbers of secretory granules in antral mucous gland cells of mutant mice as compared with WT littermates. Granule counts (E) show data from three independent mouse pairs. F, immature appearance of granules in mutant antral mucous gland cells, with common absence of the WT feature of a composite of electron-dense and less dense compartments.
