Caption | Inner ear morphology, hearing thresholds, and otoconia of Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm2.1Ajg(KIG/KIG), Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg(KIG/KIA) and Zeb1tm1.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg(KIA/KIA) mice. Paint-filled inner ears of Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm2.1Ajg, Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg and Zeb1tm1.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg mice at E14.5 are shown from lateral (A-C), medial (D-F) and ventral (G-I) views. Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm2.1Ajg morphology appeared normal. Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg ears had irregular contours of the semicircular canals (B), but researchers did not observe abnormal constrictions at the non-ampullated ends of the lateral semicircular canals (E). Homozygous inner ear structure is very abnormal (C), with discontinuous or partially ruptured semicircular canals (F) and shorter cochlear ducts (I). Average ABR thresholds for all homozygous ears (n = 10) are shown as while circles and Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg ears (n = 26) as black circles with the standard error of the mean (SEM). Scanning electron microscopy showed no difference in otoconia between homozygous (K) and Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg saccules (L) at P6. Zeb1tm2.1Ajg/Zeb1tm1.1Ajg utricles (N) had giant otoconia. a, anterior semicircular canal; c, cochlear duct; es, endolymphatic sac; l, lateral semicircular canal; p, posterior semicircular canal; s, saccule; u, utricle. | ||||||
