Histological appearance of Plac1 mutant placentae. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain of paraffin-embedded placentae obtained at E16.5 (magnification = 1.5x). Placenta from Plac1^{tm1(KOMP)Vlcg}/Plac1⁺ (X^m-X Het) females that inherited the mutant allele from the mother exhibits an expanded junctional zone that migrated and encroached into the labyrinth. Placenta from female heterozygotes that inherited the mutant allele from the father (XX^p- Het) appears normal.
