Expanded spongiotrophoblast layer in heterozygous Plac1^{tm1(KOMP)Vlcg}/Plac1⁺ females that inherit the mutant allele from the mother (X^m-X) and in homozygous Plac1^{tm1(KOMP)Vlcg}/Plac1^{tm1(KOMP)Vlcg} females that inherit one mutant allele from the mother and the other mutant allele from the father (X^m-X^p-). Spongiotrophoblasts in wild-type (WT fem) and Plac1 mutant placentae. In situ hybridization of Prl8a8 expression using a digoxygenin detection system. Non-specific signal was determined by hybridization with the "sense" riboprobe construct (magnification = 1.5x). Prl8a8 staining confirms the expansion of the spongiotrophoblasts in females that inherit the mutant allele from the mother.
