Caption | (H) Representative photomicrographs (H&E: a-g, magnification 100x; h, magnification 400x) showing pathology of distal small intestines and colons from 16 month old male mice. Mice at this age develop spontaneous intestinal inflammation and show numerous cellular defects of the lamina propria and epithelium in the small intestine and colon. Cellular defects included patchy transmural neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltrates in the lamina propria of the small intestine (asterisks, b and d), villus fusion (arrows, b and d), and thickening of the submucosa (arrow, c). Colonic inflammation (f-h) consisted of mild lamina propria infiltration of neutrophils and lymphocytes (asterisk, f), crypt abscesses (arrows, g) and mucosal lymphoid aggregates (Inset box in g; h). | ||||
