Caption Activation of cell cycle and death markers. Paraffin-embedded sections from aged wild-type (WT) (A, D, and H), Prnptm3Lnq/Prnptm3Lnq (CJD) (B, E, and I), and Prnptm2Lnq/Prnptm2Lnq (FFI) (C, F, and J) mice, stained with antibodies against apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF; A-C) and PCNA (D-J). Photographs were taken of the thalamus (A-F) and superior colliculus (H-J). Arrowheads in B and C mark protein staining that is not present in WT brains (A). Arrowheads in E, F, I, and J mark large, immunopositive neuronal nuclei. Immunopositive nuclei in D and H are smaller. (Scale bars: A-C, 0.03 mm; D-J, 0.05 mm.)
