Basement membranes (BM) of adjacent axons in the sciatic nerve are partially fused in Vwa1^tm1Jfba/Vwa1^tm1Jfba (-/-) mice. Ultrastructural analysis of transverse sections from the sicatic nerve isolated from wild type (WT, +/+) (A, C, and E) and Vwa1^tm1Jfba/Vwa1^tm1Jfba (B, D, and E), Overviews (A and B) and higher magnifications (C-F) of several axons are shown, and areas of interest are indicated by circles (B). BM of axons in WT mice are separated by an inter-axonal space filled with bundles of collagen I fibrils (ColI). Arrows highlight the alignment of the basement membranes in WT and mutant mice.
