High magnification fluorescent images of the pharyngeal arch region of E9.5-10.5 DAPI stained (a) wild-type and (b) Ptch1^wig/Ptch1^wig (wiggable) embryos. Arrowheads illustrate the abnormal size and shape of individual pharyngeal arches in each of the mutants identified in our screen. The third and fourth arches are absent and a large cleft remains in their place. The second arch is severely hypoplastic. The maxillary and mandibular prominences that comprise the first arch are massively overgrown.
