Caption Bright field images of Sox10 in situ hybridization stained E9.5-10.5 (a) wild-type and (b) Rdh10trex/Rdh10trex (trex) embryos. Arrowheads and arrows, respectively point to ectopic Sox10 positive ganglia and agenesis or hypoplasia of the neural crest cell component of the cranial ganglia. Abnormal Sox10 staining reveals perturbations in the neural crest populations that contribute to cranial ganglia. The neural crest that normally gives rise to dorsal half or proximal root of the trigeminal ganglion is missing. A similar defect is apparent in the neural crest population that gives rise to the dorsal root of the facial ganglion (asterisk). The caudal ganglia are even more severely affected as evidenced by the absence of Sox10-positive neural creast populations in the cervical region. This is indicative of the complete agenesis of hte facioacoustic/vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, and vagal ganglia. Abbreviations: f, facioacoustic/vestibule cochlear; g, glossopharyngeal; tg, trigeminal; v. vagal.
