Caption Wdfy3tm1a(KOMP)Mbp/Wdfy3tm1a(KOMP)Mbp (lacZ/lacZ) mice are characterized by widespread focal cortical dysplasias affecting most cortical areas. (a) Nissl-stained coronal sections of the retrosplenial cortex show a focal cortical dysplasia in the homozygous lacZ mutant, which disrupts all cortical layers and invades the marginal zone (MZ, arrowheads). (b) Immunofluorescence of cortical lamination markers Tbr1 (layer VI) and Ctip2 (layer V) reveals focal anomalies in the somatosensory and motor cortices of the homozygous lacZ mutant at P0 (arrowheads). Asterisks highlight abnormal layer formation through intermingling of Ctip2+ neurons with Tbr1+ neurons in layer VI. Cx, cerebral cortex; IZ/WM, intermediate zone with white matter; ML midline; MZ, marginal zone; VZ/SVZ ventricular zone/subventricular zone. Scale bars, 100 um.
