Note that kidney development fails in mutant embryos and the metanephros remains rudimentary (arrow), as also seen in (b) (arrow). Histological view of the kidneys of WT (c) and mutant embryos (d) reveals that without Wnt4 signaling the kidney mesenchyme is lacking in nephrons. Only a glomerulus with some structures of a nephron can be observed in a loosely organized mesenchyme (arrow) having few ureteric epithelial branches (arrow). (e,f) Wnt4^{tm2(EGFP/cre)Svo}/Wnt4^tm1Svo mice show anomalies in the ovary, which remains unencapsulated.
