Caption | Hearts from 5 month old Dmdmdx/? Myod1tm1Jae/Myod1tm1Jae mice (mdx:MyoD-/-, right) were compared with age-matched wild type littermates (left). A: Intact hearts of mutant mice appeared significantly larger than hearts from wild type mice. B: Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of hearts (cut transversely at midventricle) revealed an increased ventricular diameter in mutant mice compared with wild type mice. Although hearts were fixed ex vivo without diastole arrest, the apparent increase in ventricular diameter without concurrent changes in ventricular thickness suggests dilatation. C: Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and disarray in mutant mouse hearts are observed, which are not present in wild type mice. Magnification: A and B, 2mm; C, x40. | ||||||
