Caption | Embryos from Loricrintm1Der/Lor+ (+/-) intercrosses were extracted with methanol, which is thought to partially extract polar lipids, and stained with toluidine blue. Staining indicates permeability for the dye and shows immature barrier function. The approximate age of the embryos and their genotype is indicated. At E16.5 heterozygous embryos showed large unstained areas on the back skin, whereas the Loricrintm1Der/Loricrintm1Der (-/-) embryos were completely stained, indicating a delay in the formation of the skin barrier in these embryos. Wild-type (+/+) and heterozygous embryos showed a similar staining pattern (data not shown). At E17.5, mutant and wild-type (data not shown) embryos were largely unstained. | ||||
