All tissues were formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, cut at 4 um, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The scale bar represents 20 um. A: Mutant, 2 months of age, esophagus. Note the distrurbed architecture and hyperplasia of the epithelium. B: Wild-type, 2 months of age, esophagus. Regular appearance of the esophagus. C: Mutant, 5 months of age, esophagus. Changes are apparent as in A, but more pronounced. Note the increased epithelial thickness and hemorrhagic exudate in the lumen. D: Wild-type, 5 months of age, esophagus. Regular appearance.
