Image
Caption Wild-type (A,B) and Rab23opb/Rab23opb (C-F) fetuses at day 15 post coitum of development. Skeletal preparations of a wild-type (B) and mutant (D) fetus stained with alcian blue for cartilage and alizarin red for bone. In mutant fetuses (C,E), eyes were missing, the limbs exhibited preaxial duplications, the skin of the rostral body was detached dorsally, and spinal cords were open dorsally in lumbo-sacral (C) or thoracolumbar (E) axial regions (arrows). In the trunk region of mutant fetuses, the spinal cord defects were accompanied by neural arches which remained wide open dorsally (D, arrowheads) as compared with wild-type fetuses (B, arrowheads). Neural arches in the cervical axial region of wild-type (arrows in D) as well as mutant fetuses (arrows in B) were nearly closed. (F) Dorsal view of open aspect of the mutant spinal cord in E shown at higher magnification. Orientation of fetuses: rostral to the left.
