The strains BALB/cHeA and STS/A differ in the production of Il4 and Il10 after stimulation with concanavalin A (ConA). The genetic basis of this difference was analyzed using the recombinant congenic (RC) strains of the BALB/c - c - STS/Dem (CcS/Dem) series. The authors analyzed Il4 expression in 164 (CcS-20 x BALB/c)F2 hybrids after stimulation with 2.5 an 5 micrograms/ml ConA. Statistical evaluation revealed linkage of Il4 expression induced by 5 micrograms/ml for 48 hours and 2.5 micrograms/ml for 72 hours to the marker D16Mit15 on mouse Chromosome 16 (corrected P = 0.046 and 0.0062 respectively). The STS allele indicates higher il4 concentration. These data indicated the presence of a QTL, Cypr1 in this region controlling the Il4 level induced by polyclonal stimulation of ConA.
