Notes
  • Experiment
Five different inbred strains were used in mapping loci influencing brain weight, striatal volume, striatal neuron-packing density, and striatal neuron number. Two QTLs, Bsc1(for striatal volume; LRS=17.5) and Stnn (for striatal neuron number; LRS = 15) mapped to mouse Chromosome 10 (in association with D10Mit186 at 29 cM) and Chromosome 19 (in association with D19Mit123 at 51 cM), respectively. Bsc1 and Stnn do not interact in controlling striatal volume or neuron number. Strains were chosen for phenotypic variance in the traits studied. Variation in brain weights for the different strains is as follows: RI strain BXD5 and inbred strain BALB/cJ represent high brain weights; C57BL/6J represents a mid brain weight; A/J and DBA/2J represent low brain weight. Striatal weights are significantly higher in BXD5 and BALB/cJ compared to A/J, C57BL/6J, and DBA/2J. Striatal neuron-packing density is greater in A/J and DBA/2J compared to C57BL/6J, BALB/cJ, and BXD5. Striatal neuron number did not vary significantly among the 5 strains.
