Notes
  • Experiment
92 microsatellite markers were typed in 350 M16i x (M16i x CAST/Ei)F1 backcross animals to identify QTLs affecting directional asymmetry (DA) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of the mandible in 12 week old animals. M16i is an inbred line selectively bred for rapid growth rate and CAST/Ei is a wild-derived inbred strain. 3 significant QTLs for mandible DA mapped to mouse Chromosome 2 from 25 cM - 43 cM (Daq17, LOD = 5.62 near D2Mit61) and 65 cM - 72 cM (Daq18, LOD>3.25 near D2Mit224) and mouse Chromosome 8 from 14 cM - 23 cM (Daq19, LOD = 3.67 at D8Mit4). Daq17, Daq18, and Daq19 were also associated with mandible size. Putative QTLs affecting mandible DA mapped to Chromosome 7 from 21 cM - 91 cM (LOD = 2.38 near D7Mit55), Chromosome 10 from 22 cM - 49 cM (LOD = 3.18 near D10Mit31), Chromosome 11 from 10 cM - 53 cM (LOD = 2.17 near D11Mit63), Chromosome 14 from 40 cM - 48 cM (LOD = 2.19 at D14Mit42), and Chromosome 17 from 19 cM - 31 cM (LOD = 2.17 at D17Mit22). No QTLs were identified for mandible FA.
