Forty (BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6ByJ)F1 x C57BL/6ByJ backcross animals were typed for 51 microsatellite markers to detect loci associated with protection against vaginal candidiasis. Parental inbred strain BALB/cByJ is protected from candidiasis after immunization and subsequent challenge with Candida albicans where as parental inbred strain C57BL/6ByJ is not protected. The trait appears to be dominantly inherited since (BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6ByJ)F1 animals exhibit protection similar to BALB/cByJ. QTLs were detected on mouse Chromosomes 8, 9, and 18. Pvcan1 maps to mouse Chromosome 8 with a LOD = 2.2 at D8Mit155 and D8Mit58 at approximately 1 cM - 2 cM. A candidate locus for Pvcan1 is the Fc receptor for IgE, Fcer2a. Pvcan2 maps to mouse Chromosome 9 with a LOD = 1.9 at D9Mit67 at approximately 17 cM. A candidate locus for Pvcan2 is Icam1. Pvcan3 maps to mouse Chromosome 18 with a LOD = 2.0 at D18Mit63 at approximately 16 cM. A candidate locus for Pvcan3 is Icam1-rs1.
