298 (SJL/J x B10.S)F1 x B10.S backcross animals were typed for microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 15 cM to identify QTLs associated with experimentally induced allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) sub-phenotypes. Inbred strain SJL/J is EAE susceptible while B10.S is EAE resistant. This study revealed new phenotypes in association with previously identified QTLs: Eae8 on mouse Chromosome 2 segregates with EAE-related weight loss (P = 6.7 x 10-5 at D2Mit200) and Eae3 on mouse chromosome 3 segregates with paralysis (P = 1.4 x 10-3 at D3Mit40). A new locus, Eae24, mapped to mouse Chromosome 8 in association with inflammation and paralysis (P = 8.2 x 10<-6 at D8Mit3). Possible candidate genes for Eae24 are scat (severe combined anemia and thrombocytopenia), mnd (motor neuron degeneration) and Plcd (phospholipase C, delta). A suggestive locus for paralysis and mapped to mouse Chromosome 18 near 55 cM (P = 1.9 x 10-3 at D18Nds1).
