116 female (BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6ByJ)F2 animals were used to map QTLs associated with resistance to infection by Listeria monocytogenes. Animals were injected intravenously with 2-5 x 104 CFU of L.monocytogenes and assessed for survival time. Death occurs in animals from BALB/cByJ parental strain within 72 hours of inoculation while animals from parental strain C57BL/6ByJ survive indefinitely. QTLs for listeriosis resistance, Listr1 and Listr2, mapped to mouse Chromosome 5 from 41 cM - 59 cM (LOD = 6.8 at D5Mit357) and mouse Chromosome 13 (LOD = 9.5 at D13Mit233), respectively. At Listr1, BALB/cByJ-derived alleles appear to increase survival time in (BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6ByJ)F2 animals infected with L.monocytogenes while the C57BL/6ByJ-derived allele increases survival time in a dominant fashion at Listr2. Animals homozygous for resistance alleles at both loci exhibited greatest survival time whereas animals homozygous for susceptibility alleles at both loci exhibited the shortest average survival time.
