174 animals from reciprocal (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 intercrosses and 35 BXD/Ty (B = C57BL/6J, D = DBA/2J) recombinant (RI) inbred strains were screened for loci associated with olfactory bulb size. The olfactory bulb of parental strain C57BL/6J is typically 13% heavier than the olfactory bulb of DBA/2J. A QTL for olfactory bulb size, Bulb1, mapped to mouse chromosome 4 with a maximum LRS of 16 at D4Mit186 using combined data from the F2 intercross and BXD RI strains. The QTL interval of Bulb1 spans 25 cM -60 cM and peaks at approximately 44.6 cM. C57BL/6J-derived alleles contribute to increased bulb size at Bulb1. Bulb2 maps to mouse Chromosome 6 with a maximum LRS score of 16 at D6Mit291 in the F2 intercross. The QTL interval for Bulb2 spans 20 cM - 65 cMand could possibly contain 2 separate QTLs at 20 cM - 25 cM and 50 cM - 65 cM. C57BL/6J alleles contribute to increased olfactory bulb size at Bulb2. Bulb3 maps to mouse Chromosome 11 with a peak LRS score of 13.2 at D11Mit231 in the BXD RI strains. The QTL interval for Bulb3 spans 15 cM - 35 cM and peaks at 17.5 cM. DBA/2J-derived alleles are associated with increased olfactory bulb size at Bulb3. Bulb4 maps to mouse Chromosome 17 with a peak LRS score of 14.6 at D17Mit135 in the F2 intercross and BXD RI strains. The QTL interval for Bulb4 is 3 cM - 10 cM and peaks at 6.6 cM. DBA/2J-derived alleles contribute to increase olfactory bulb size at Bulb4. All QTLs appear to be inherited in an additive fashion. No candidate genes have been identified.
