Genome scan at an average marker spacing of 21.3 cM was performed on 147 (RR x KK)F2 dams to identify loci associated with nuturing ability. Litter weight was used as an indirect measure of nurturing ability. KK females exhibit normal nurturing ability with a pup weaning rate of 97% while RR females exhibit decreased nurturing ability with a 69.9% weaning rate. A locus on mouse Chromosome 5, Naq1, mapping from 70 cM - 78 cM showed significant linkage to litter weight at 12 days after birth (LOD=4.5) and suggestive linkage at 21 days after birth (LOD=4.0). RR-derived alleles confer decreased litter weight and litter size in a recessive manner at Naq1. Potential candidate genes mapping near Naq1 include Zp3, Zan, and Adam1a. A suggestive locus mapped to 9 cM on mouse Chromosome 9 with LOD=3.2 at D9Mit90 for litter weight at day 21. RR-derived alleles confer decreased litter weight in a dominant fashion at this locus.
