The authors used a backcross between JF1 and C57BL/6J mice to map the Eks mutation. Male Eks heterozygotes were mated with female JF1 mice. Affected N1 progeny were crossed with C57BL/6J mice and all N2 offspring were examined for Eks phenotypes using radiography. The order and genetic distance determined from this study are as follows: centromere - D14Mit15 - (6.0 +/- 2.3 cM) - Eks, D14Mit62, D14Mit84, D14Mit5 - (6.0 +/- 2.3 cM) - D14Mit28 - (4.0 +/- 2.0 cM) - D14Mit32 - telomere. Additionally, eks was found to be a semidominant mutation.
