102 microsatellite markers were screened in a population of (LG/J x SM/J)F2 female animals to identify QTLs associated with early growth rate of pups from weeks 1-2. Early growth rate was used as a measure of maternal performance. Both direct effect QTLsand maternal effect QTLs were assessed. Two direct effect QTLs with genome-wide significance, Egrd1 and Egrd2, mapped to mouse Chromosomes 5 and 15, respectively. Egrd1 spans 88 cM - 118 cM on mouse Chromosome 5 with a peak LPR score at D5Mit26. Egrd2 spans 10 cM -54 cM on mouse Chromsome 15 with a peak LPR score at D15Mit5. Three maternal effect QTLs with genome-wide significance, Egrm1, Egrm2, and Egrm3, mapped to mouse Chromosomes 1, 6, and 7, respectively. Egrm1 spans 38 cM - 54 cM on mouse Chromosome1 witha peak LPR score at D1Mit7. Egrm2 spans 50 cM - 68 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 with a peak LPR score at D6Mit9. Egrm3 spans 44cM - 56 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 with a peak LPR score at D7Nds1.
