Genome scan at an average spacing of 20 cM - 30 cM was performed on 391 male (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 animals to detect QTLs associated with spatial learning. Animals were subjected to the Morris water maze test and scored for rates of spatial learning and t statistics for distance traveled and latency to reach the hidden platform. The animals were also evaluated for open field activity in a novel environment and conditioned avoidance.

QTLs associated with spatial learning were mapped to 46 cM on mouse Chromosome 4 (Splrn1) and to approximately 39 cM on mouse Chromosome 12 (Splrn2). Splrn1 reaches LOD=5.0 peak significance and spans 0 cM - 56 cM on mouse Chromosome 4. Splrn1 accounts for 3.4% of the phenotypic variance. Splrn2 reaches LOD=5.1 peak significance and spans 19 cM - 58 cM on mouse Chromosome 12. Splrn2 accounts for 2.9% of the phenotypic variance.

Four QTLs associated with open field activity in a novel environment were identified. Ofca1 mapped to 71 cM on mouse Chromosome 3 (LOD=3.8), Ofca2 mapped to 53 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 (LOD=5.0), Ofca3 mapped to 8 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 (LOD=4.0), and Ofca4 mapped to 8 cM on mouse Chromosome 19 (LOD=4.1). Ofca2, Ofca3, and Ofca4 also show linkage to conditioned avoidance.

Cdav, a QTL linked to conditioned avoidance, was identified at 87 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 (LOD=5.4).
