The Xiaf2 and Xiaf3 dominant mutations were identified in an ENU mutagenesis screen for X chromosome inactivation mutations. The authors identified two candidate regions in the mouse genome that transmit the mutant phenotype to the offspring. One is on Chromosome 5 between D5Mit214 and D5Mit43 (Xiaf2), where as the other is on proximal 10 between D10Mit80 and D10Mit138 (Xiaf3). The Xiaf2 candidate region spans 30 cM on proximal mouse Chromosome 5 from approximately 70 cM - 103 cM. The Xiaf3 candidate region spans the distal 23 cM of mouse Chromosome 10 from approximately 4 cM - 34 cM.

    Candidate genes in the region of Xiaf2 include Zfp70, Hmgb1, Brca2, Hspb1 (Hsp25), and Zipro1. Candidate genes in the region of Xiaf3 include Hmg20b (Braf35), Hdac2, Mbd3, Dnmt3l, and Zfa
