Genome scan was performed on a 1204 (C57BL/6J x C3H/HeJ)F2 animals, 794 (C57BL/6J x C3H/HeJ)F1 x C57BL/6J backcross animals, and 680 (C57BL/6J x C3H/HeJ)F1 x C3H/HeJ backcross animals to identify QTLs associated with ethanol-induced activation of locomotor activity. Parental strain C57BL/6J exhibits little or no activation of locomotor activity when administered ethanol solution whereas parental strain C3H/HeJ exhibits increased locomotor activity when administered ethanol solution. 79 microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 17 cM were used in the genome scan.

A female-specific locus associated with ethanol-induced locomotor activity, Eila1, mapped to 100 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 with LOD=6.4 at D1Mit403. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased locomotor activation at Eila1 with recessive inheritance. The QTL range of Eila1 spans 84 cM - telomere and is flanked by markers D1Mit15 and D1Mit26. Eila1 accounts for 3-5% of the phenotypic variance.

Eila2 mapped to 47 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 with LOD=9.8-10.4 at D6Mit9. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer additively inherited increased locomotor activation at this locus. The QTL range of Eila1 spans 34 cM - 58 cM and is flanked by markers D6Mit74 and D6Mit254. Eila2 accounts for 9-10% of the phenotypic variance.

Eila3 mapped to 28 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 with LOD=7.3-8.8 at D15Mit111. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles confer additively-inherited increased locomotor activation at this locus. The QTL range of Eila3 spans 18 cM - 44 cM. Eila3 accounts for 9% ofthe phenotypic variance.
