BXD (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J) RI (recombinant inbred) strains were used to map QTLs associated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced angiogenesis. Parental strain C57BL/6J exhibits lower VEGF responsiveness compared to parental strain DBA/2J (0.8 mm2 vs 1.4 mm2). Angiogenesis was measured by corneal neovascularization assay.

    A locus for angiogenesis by VEGF, Angvq1, mapped to mouse Chromosome 10 between D10Mit194 and D10Mit42. Candidate genes mapping to this region are P4ha1, Col13a1, Col6a1,Col6a2, Col18a1, Mmp11, Itgb2, Tbxa2r, Efna2, Mif, and Adora2a. Angvq1 also overlaps with several previously mapped QTLs: Pas11, Bsc1, Igfbp3q2, and Lifespan2.

A second locus named Angvq2 mapped to mouse Chromosome 2 between D2Mit80 and D2Mit82 with strongest association near Il2ra (6.4 cM). Candidate genes mapping to this region are Ptgds, Il1f9, Il1f10, Il1rn, and Edf1. Angvq2 also overlaps with several previously mapped QTLs: Kwq6, Igf1q1, Sluc16, and Sluc22.
