394 (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 animals were genotyped at 97 polymorphic loci at an average spacing of 15 cM - 20 cM to identify QTLs associated with muscle weight. 23 BXD recombinant inbred (RI) strains were also analyzed using a panel of 623 microsatellite markers. Parental strain C57BL/6J exhibits greater muscle raw weight compared to parental strain DBA/2J.

Two QTLs were identified in the (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 population. Skmw1 (skeletal muscle weight 1) mapped to 6.4 cM (LOD=4.6) on mouse Chromosome 3 and spans 0 cM - 17 cM. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased gastrocnemius muscle weight at Skmw1. Skmw2 mapped to 58.3 cM (LOD=3.5) on mouse Chromosome 8 and spans 53 cM - telomere. This locus is associated with markers D8Mit211, D8Mit113, and D8Mit271. DBA/2J-derived alleles confer increased extensor digitorum longus (EDL) weight at Skmw2. Skmw2 was also detected in the BXD population.

Three QTLs were identified in the BXD RI population. Skmw3 mapped to 13 cM (LOD=3.5) on mouse Chromosome 1 and spans 1 cM - 14 cM. DBA/2J-derived alleles confer increased gastrocnemius muscle weight at Skmw3. Skmw4 mapped to 23 cM (LOD=3.1) on mouse Chromosome 2 and spans 17 cM - 30 cM. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased EDL muscle weight at Skmw4. Skmw5 mappedto 36 cM (LOD=4.3) on mouse Chromosome 17 and spans 34 cM - 38 cM. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased gastrocnemius muscle weight at Skmw5.

An interacting locus pair was detected in the BXD RI population. DBA/2J-derived alleles at D1Mit134 (49 cM) in conjunction with DBA/2J-derived alleles at D17Mit3 (41.5 cM) confers decreased muscle weight, whereas DBA/2J-derived alleles at D1Mit134 in conjunction with C57BL/6J-derived alleles at D17Mit3 confers increased muscle weight.
