The Tlln locus on mouse Chromosome 1 was refined using progeny testing and fine-mapping of F4 generation animals derived from the recombinant congenics. Recombinant congenic animals were created by selecting for C57BL/6J-derived DNA from D1Mit30 to D1Mit57 in (C57BL/6J x DBA/2)F1 hybrids, and backcrossing to DBA/2J for 4 generations. Animals were maintained by intercrossing for 12 generations. F4 generations derived from recombinant congenic lines were also created for this study. Body length and body mass was measured at 3, 6, and 10 weeks of age.

From recombinant progeny testing, significant linkage to growth traits was observed at D1Mit30 for the single-QTL analysis. In the two-QTL epistatic analysis, the suggestive locus pair that was analyzed did not reach statistical significance. Results from the F4 population are similar to the above. The 95% confidence interval of Tlln was refined to a 4 Mb region between D1Mit451 (81.6 cM) and D1Mit219 (81.6 cM). There are approximately 33 genes in this interval but none are obvious candidates.

Authors also detected a possible second and third QTL near and 22.5 cM distal to D1Mit30 (70 cM), respectively. The second (proximal) QTL was detected in the recombinant progeny testing population whereas the third (distal) QTL was detected in the F4 population.
