Linkage analysis was performed on 20 BXD (B=C57BL/6J; D=DBA/2J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains to identify QTLs associated with lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the liver as a function of aging. Liver peroxidation increases with age but is significantly increased in DBA/2J compared to C57BL/6J. LPO increases 50% in 23-month old C57BL/6J animals compared to 2-month old animals, but LPO increases 400% in 23-month old DBA/2J animals compared to 2-month old animals.

Linkage to LPO was detected at 55.2 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near Zfp4 (P<0.0006). This QTL is named Lpolv (lipid peroxidation in liver). Two potential candidate genes for this locus are Lcat (53 cM) and Nqo1 (53.3 cM). However, sequence analysis of regions of Lcat and Nqo1 did not reveal polymorphisms between C57BL/6J and DBA/2J.
