A lung tumor susceptibility locus was previously mapped to the MHC locus on mouse Chromosome 17 around 23 cM. Two congenic strains, B10.A(1R) and B10.A(2R), differ at this locus and were used to study expression differences of potential candidate genes in this region. B10.A(1R) is resistant to chemically induced lung tumors whereas B10.A(2R) is susceptible.

Sequence analysis was performed on 3 genes (D17H6S56E-3, D17H6S56E-5, and Vars2) in a 27 kb interval that differed between B10.A(1R) and B10.A(2R). No SNPs were discovered in this interval except for an A to T change in intron 7 of D17H6S56E-3, which is the breakpoint of the congenic region. Northern blot analysis and quantitative real time PCR did not reveal significant differences in expression between B10.A(1R) and B10.A(2R) at these 3 candidate genes.
