Linkage analysis was performed on 275 animals from a (NMRI8/Fbn x DBA/2OlaHsd)F2 intercross to identify QTLs associated with post-weaning body weight and body composition. Parental strain NMRI8/Fbn is 2.5 times heavier than parental strain DBA/OlaHsd, and also exhibits increased muscle and organ weight at 6 weeks of age and 4.6 times the amount of reproductive fat of DBA/2OlaHsd. 92 microsatellite markers were used for the genome scan.

An interval on mouse Chromosome 1 from 44 cM - 45 cM showed linkage to body weight at 4 and 5 weeks of age. These QTLs were designated Bwnd4wk1 (body weight, NMR1 x DBA, 4 week, QTL 1) and Bwnd5wk1, respectively. (Suggestive linkage to body weight at 3 weeks was also observed.) Bwnd4wk1 and Bwnd5wk1 are both centered at 44 cM and exhibit additive inheritance with the NMRI8/Fbn-derived allele conferring increased body weight. A locus at distal chromosome 1 showed linkage to body weight at 6 weeks of age. This QTL is designated Bwnd6wk1 and is centered at 72 cM. Bwnd6wk1 also shows linkage to kidney weight, spleen weight, and muscle weight.
