Linkage analysis was performed on 275 animals from a (NMRI8/Fbn x DBA/2OlaHsd)F2 intercross to identify QTLs associated with post-weaning body weight and body composition. Parental strain NMRI8/Fbn is 2.5 times heavier than parental strain DBA/OlaHsd, and also exhibits increased muscle and organ weight at 6 weeks of age and 4.6 times the amount of reproductive fat of DBA/2OlaHsd. 92 microsatellite markers were used for the genome scan.

An interval on mouse Chromosome 7 from 20 cM - 30 cM showed linkage to body weight at 2, 4, 5, and 6 weeks of age. These QTLs were designated Bwnd2wk4 (26 cM), Bwnd4wk3 (20 cM), Bwnd5wk4 (29 cM), and Bwnd6wk3 (30 cM). NMRI8/Fbn-derived alleles confer increased body weight with an additive mode of inheritance at these loci.
