Linkage analysis was performed on 439 pregnant female animals from a (M16i x L6)F2 intercross to identify QTLs associated with reproductive traits. Parental strain M16i exhibits a higher ovulation rate and higher number of live fetuses at 10 weeks of gestation compared to L6, but parental strain L6 exhibits increased total fetal survival rate compared to M16i.

Several linkages mapped to an interval on mouse Chromosome 2 between D2Mit6 and D2Mit133. This interval appears to experience transmission ratio distortion as a high frequency of F2 animals are homozygous for M16i-derived alleles. Peak linkage to live fetuses, Lfq2 (live fetuses QTL 2), occurs at 38.4 cM (LOD=7.7). The QTL interval of Lfq2 spans 37.1 cM - 40.9 cM. M16i-derived alleles confer increased number of live fetuses at Lfq2. Peak linkage to dead fetuses, Dfq1 (dead fetuses QTL 1), occurs at 41.6 cM (LOD=4.4). The QTL interval of Dfq1 spans 32.2 cM - 49.2 cM). M16i-derived alleles confer increased number of dead fetuses at Dfq1. Peak linkage to preimplantation embryo survival, Espq1 (embryo survival preimplantation 1), occurs at 44.1 cM (LOD=6.7). The QTL interval of Espq1 spans 36.6 cM - 49.8 cM. M16i-derived alleles confer increased embryo survival at Espq1. Peak linkage to total embryo survival, Estoq1 (embryo survival total QTL 1), occurs at 50.1 cM (LOD=6.4 cM). The QTL interval of Estoq1 spans 44.4 cM - 62.7 cM. M16i-derived alleles confer increased total embryo survival at Estoq1. The M16i allele exhibits additive inheritance at all QTLs listed above.

Linkage to live fetuses (Lfq1), preimplantation embryo survival (Espq2), and total embryo survival (Estoq2) mapped to 70.2 cM (LOD=8.2), 66.8 cM (LOD=6.0), and 70.2 cM (LOD=6.4 cM), respectively. The QTL interval of Lfq1 spans 56.5 cM - 77.2 cM, the QTL interval of Espq2 spans 53.4 cM - 74 cM, and the QTL interval of Estoq2 spans 62.7 cM - 78.9 cM. All 3 QTLs are flanked by markers D2Mit133 and D2Mit224. M16i-derived alleles confer additively inherited increase in number of live fetuses at Lfq1, increased preimplantation survival at Espq2, and increased total embryo survival at Estoq2.

Linkage to preimplantation embryo survival, Espq4, mapped 70.2 cM (LOD=5.3) on mouse Chromosome 2. The QTL interval of Espq4 spans 74 cM - 83 cM and isflanked by markers D2Mit224 and D2Mit22. M16i-derived alleles confer additively inherited increased embryo survival at Espq4.
