    487 animals from a heterogeneous stock designated UM-HET3 were analyzed for bone (femur) geometry traits. UM-HET3 is derived from a cross between (BALB/cJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x (C3H/HeJ x DBA/2J)F1. 99 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 15 cM - 20 cM were used in the genome scan. Nine geometric traits were evaluated for each femur.

    Linkage to cross sectional area (CSA) mapped to 4.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 3 near D3Mit62. This locus is designated Fmgty2. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles confer increase CSA compared to DBA/2J-derived alleles.
