  • Experiment
Linkage analysis was performed on 16 LGXSM (LG=LG/J; SM=SM/J) recombinant inbred (RI) lines to identify QTLs associated with obesity and diabetes traits. Parental strain LG/J exhibits a larger body size compared to parental strain SM/J and these two strains also differ in obesity and diabetes related traits in response to dietary fat. 506 microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 2 to 3 cM were used in the genome scan. 39 loci were mapped but only those reaching genomewide significance are reportedhere.

On mouse Chromosome 6, an interval between D6Mit236 (3.1 cM) and D6Mit186 (31 cM) shows linkage to glucose tolerance at 20 weeks. This locus is named Dbts1 (diabetes 1). SM/J-derived alleles confer increased glucose tolerance at Dbts1. A potentialcandidate gene mapping near Dbts1 is Fabp1 (30 cM).
