Linkage analysis was performed on 88 animals from a SWR x (SWR x NZB)F1 backcross population to identify QTLs associated with lupus phenotypes. (SWR x NZB)F1 hybrid animals are susceptible to lupus nephritis. Animals were sero-typed at 9-12 months of age. 116 autosomal microsatellite markers at an average spacing of 10.6 cM were used for the genome scan.

Suggestive linkage to IgM anti-ssDNA and IgG anti-dsDNA antibodies mapped to 63 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 near D6Mit14 (LOD=2.6). This locus is thought to be the previously identified lupus QTL Lbw4 (71 cM). NZB-derived alleles confer increased IgM anti-SS-DNA and IgG anti-DS-DNA antibodies with a dominant mode of inheritance.

1.22.2016 Curator Note: Because Lbw4 was originally mapped in 1994 in J:20991 using an
(NZB/BlScr x NZW/LacScr)F2 intercross, which differs from the mapping population used here, we consider the current study a separate map experiment and have labeled the QTL Nba12, New Zealand Black autoimmunity 12. The nomenclature is in keeping with the authors
use of the Nba nomenclature for NZB derived loci and Swrl for the SWR derived loci. [See:Linkage analysis and statistics.]
