Linkage analysis was performed on a population of female (NZB/BlNJ x NZW/LacJ)F1 x NZW/BlNJ backcross animals to identify QTLs associated with autoimmune nephritis traits. Neither parental strains NZB/BlNJ nor NZW/LacJ develop severe nephritis. However, (NZB/BlNJ x NZW/LacJ)F1 hybrid animals do develop severe nephritis with several autoantibody traits. This study extends a previous nephritis mapping experiment using 60 female animals from the same kind of cross. In this study 48 additional female animalsand 9 microsatellite markers were added to the analysis.

Weak linkage to nephritis mapped to 32 cM on mouse Chromosome 16 near D16Mit5 (LOD=0.003). This locus also shows suggestive linkage to IgG anti-dsDNA and anti-histone antibody production. Homozygosity for NZW/LacJ-derived alleles confer increased antibody production at this locus
