  The rc locus was mapped using a backcross population of 192 (C57BL/6J-rc x BALB/cJ)F1 x C57BL/6J-rc animals. One recombination event was observed between rc and D9Mit163 (33 cM), and 3 recombination events were observed between rc and D9Mit104 (35 cM). The rc locus is thought to be proximal to D9Mit104. A candidate gene, Loxl, maps to this locus (33 cM). Complementation analysis was performed by crossing Loxl1 null mutants with C57BL/6J-rc mutants and it was determined that Loxl1 and rc are not allelic. Therefore, Loxl1 is not likely the gene responsible for the rc phenotype.
