  The Hx critical region was further narrowed to a 100 kb interval on mouse Chromosome 5 using a BAC contig. Hx was mapped to BAC clone 311J12, which also contains the candidate gene Lmbr1. Hx and Lmbr1 map downstream of Shh and D5Mit195. centromere - Shh-D5Mit195 - Hx/Lmbr1 - telomere. Sequence analysis revealed that Hx mutants and Hxl3 mutants both have single base pair changes in a conserved region of intron 5 of Lmbr1. Hxl3 is located 145 bp distal to Hx. Complementation analysis demonstrated that Hx/Lmbr1 is a downstream cis regulator of Shh.
