Linkage analysis was performed on 192 (BALB/cJ x SJL/J)F1 x BALB/cJ backcross animals to identify QTL associated with susceptibility to mouse adenovirus type 1 (MAV-1). Parental strain SJL/J is highly susceptible to infection with MAV-1 whereas parental strain BALB/cJ is resistant. 65 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 19.1 cM were used for the genome scan.

Highly significant linkage to MAV-1 susceptibility mapped to mouse Chromosome 15 between 28.4 cM (D15Mit270) and 47.7 cM (D15Mit70) with LOD=21.2. This locus is named Msq1 (MAV-1 susceptibility QTL 1). The 2-LOD support interval for Msq1 spans from 39 cM to 54 cM, which corresponds to 65 Mb to 78 Mb on the physical map. Potential candidate genes mapping to the Msq1 interval include the Ly6 complex (42.7 cM), Hsf1 (43 cM), and Sla (37.5 cM).

Suggestive linkage to MAV-1 susceptibility was detected on mouse Chromosome 5 with LOD=1.2. This locus had an additive effect. Suggestive interaction between loci on mouse Chromosomes 2 and 4 was detected. Suggestive evidence of sex and genotype interaction was detected on mouse Chromosomes 4, 8, 13, and 14.
