C57BL/10 and the B10 congenic strains (B10.A, B10.A(1R), B10.A(2R), B10.A(5R), B10.A(15R) and B10.A(18R)) were used to position Aecp on mouse Chromosome 17 in the H2-S to H2-D interval. Using these congenics, Aecp was further shown to be distal to H2-Eb1 and C4 and proximal to D17Boy1 (19 cM; B144). When fed the vitamin A supplemented chow during pregnancy, strains C57BL/10 and B10.A(2R) exhibit significantly increased incidence of cleft lip. The b allele at H2-S and H-2D1 is associated with susceptibility vitamin A induced cleft lip while the d and k alleles are associated with resistance. The susceptible congenic strain B10.A(2R) carries the d allele at H2-S and the b allele at H2-D1. Aecp maps near a previously identified dexamethasone-induced cleft palate locus named Dxcp2 (18.975 cM) but the authors believe they are not identical.
