C57BL/10 and the B10 H2 congenic strains B10.A, B10.A(1R), B10.A(2R), B10.A(5R), B10.A(15R) and B10.A(18R) were used to map loci influencing the frequency of vitamin A induced dorsoventral vaginal septum (DVS). Female animals were examined at 6 weeks of age for the presence of DVS. The B10.A(5R) congenic exhibits this highest incidence of DVS out of all the strain studied. Adding vitamin A to the diet did not increase DVS incidence in B10.A, B10.A(1R), B10.A(5R), B10.A(15R) and B10.A(18R).

Two loci named Dvs1 and Dvs2 mapped to the H2 locus on mouse Chromosome 17. Dvs1 is proximal to H2-Ea (18.7 cM) while Dvs2 is believed to be located between Aecp (19.5 cM) and Dxcp2 (18.975 cM). Dvs1 and Dvs2 may interact to influence the DVS phenotype.
