    Analysis of Lmr1 (leishmaniasis resistance 1) and Lmr2 (leishmaniasis resistance 2) in congenic lines revealed that increased wound healing ability is associated with resistance to parasitic infection by Leishmania major. A congenic line carrying DNA from resistant strain C57BL/6J at Lmr1 (23 cM, chr17) and Lmr2 (23 cM, chr9) on the genetic background of susceptible strain BALB/cAN was constructed. This line is named B6.C-Lmr1 Lmr2 and the Lmr1 and Lmr2 congenic intervals span D17Mit57 (7.6 cM) - D17Mit129 (55.7 cM) and D9Mit89 (8 cM) - D9Mit71 (29 cM), respectively. A reciprocal congenic named C.B6-Lmr1 Lmr2 was constructed carrying BALB/cAN-derived congenic intervals spanning D17Mit57 (7.6 cM) - D17Mit39 (45.3 cM) and D9Mit89 (8 cM) - D9Mit329 (25 cM) on a C57BL/6J genetic background. Animals were intradermally injected with 10(6) L. major at the base of the tail, and 4 mm punch wounds were administered.

    Collagen deposition at wound site of congenic animals was more similar to that of the donor strainthan the recipient strain. This observation was true for both experimentally induced wounds as well as L. major-induced cutaneous lesions. The presence of C57BL/6J-derived alleles at Lmr1 and Lmr2 promote faster wound healing on a BALB/cAN background. Conversely, the presence of BALB/cAn-derived alleles at Lmr1 and Lmr2 confer slower wound healing on a C57BL/6J background.
