Resistance to mouse coronavirus strain JHM (JHMV) mapped to mouse Chromosome 7 near Itgal (60 cM, formerly Ly-15) in 13 recombinant inbred (RI) strains derived from BALB/cHeA and STS/A progenitor strains. This locus is named Pj1 (paralysis, JHMV-induced 1). Parental strain BALB/cHeA is susceptible to JHMV (100% mortality 2 weeks after innoculation) whereas parental strain STS/A exhibits partial resistance (30% mortality 2 weeks after innoculation). The strain distibution pattern of 92 genes showed a correlation between Pj1 and Itgal. Since the mortality of RI animals varied between 72% and 100% and the onset of paralysis varied considerably it is thought that resistance to JHMV is under multifactorial control.
