Inbred strain C57BL/6J infected with influenza virus exhibits increased short wave sleep (SWS) time during the dark phase whereas BALB/cByJ exhibits normal or reduced SWS time during the light phase. The strain distribution pattern of 223 informative markers in 13 CXB (C=BALB/cByJ; B=C57BL/6J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains mapped Srilp (sleep response to influenza, light phase) to 28 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 (LRS=16.6 1 cM proximal to D6Mit316). Srilp confers increased SWS time in influenza-infectedanimals. The 95% confidence interval of Srilp spans 21 cM - 31 cM from D6Mit74 to D6Mit188. Srilp affects SWS time during circadian hours 3-6 in animals infected with influenza virus. Ghrhr (26 cM), Crhr2 (28 cM), and Cd8a (30.5 cM) are potential candidate genes mapping near Srilp. However, Cd8a may be a less likely candidate as C57BL/6J and BALB/cByJ express the same allele at Cd8a.

Suggestive linkage to influenza-induced SWS time mapped to 60 cM (D14Mit266) on mouse Chromosome 14, 37 cM (D7Mit90) onmouse Chromosome 7, and 54 cM - 57 cM (D8Mit213 and D8Mit318) on mouse Chromosome 8. The locus at chromosomes 7 confers increased SWS time in influenza-infected animals during the dark phase whereas the chromosome 14 locus confers increased SWS time duringthe dark phase. The chromosome 8 locus increases SWS time during both light and dark phases. Mc1r (melanocortin 1 receptor) at 68 cM maps near the chromosome 8 locus.
