    The authors used an intersubspecific backcross to identify the genomic region containing the Tw gene. Genotyping of nearly 600 mouse progeny from (Tw/CAST C57BL/6) crosses using microsatellite markers from proximal region of mouse Chromosome 18 was informative in mapping Tw. Mapping results localized the Tw locus to a 4.3 Mb genomic region between D18Mit19 and D18Mit166. This region included a Riken gene 9430023B20Rik which was renamed to Mkx. The authors suggests that the developmental expression pattern indicates that MKx (Irxl1) is a good candidate gene for the Twirler (Tw) gene.
