Notes
  • Experiment
Linkage analysis was performed on 110 animals from a (C57BL/6J x DBA/2J)F2 intercross to identify QTLs associated with craniofacial traits such as snout length and face width. Parental strain DBA/2J displays shorter snouts and wider faces compared to parental strain C57BL/6J.

Significant linkage to snout length mapped to 44 cM on mouse Chromosome 12 near D12Mit7 with LOD=5.2. This locus is named Ssnt1 (short snout 1). Homozygosity for C57BL/6J-derived alleles at Ssnt1 appears to confer shorter snout length compared to homozygosity for DBA/2J-derived alleles at Ssnt1.

Ssnt2 (short snout 2) mapped to 64 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 near D6Mit200 (LOD=4.3). Homozygosity for C57BL/6J-derived alleles at Ssnt2 confers shorter snout length compared to DBA/2J homozygotes.

Ssnt3 mapped to 0 cM on mouse Chromosome 18 near D18Mit4 (LOD=4.7). Homozygosity for DBA/2J-derived alleles at Ssnt3 confers decreased snout length compared to homozygosity for C57BL/6J-derived alleles.

Linkage to facial width mapped to 60 cMon mouse Chromosome 10 near D10Mit162 (LOD=3). This locus is named Fwth1 (facial width 1). Homozygosity for C57BL/6J-derived alleles at this locus confers wider facial measurements compared to homozygosity for DBA/2J-derived alleles.

Fwth2 (facial width 2) mapped to 58 cM on mouse Chromosome 13 near D13Mit139 (LOD=3.5). Homozygosity for DBA/2J-derived alleles at Fwth2 confers increased face width compared to homozygosity for C57BL/6J-derived alleles.
